A golem is an animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore, which is entirely created from inanimate matter, usually clay or mud. The most famous golem narrative involves Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the late 16th-century rabbi of Prague, who made a creature formed out dust and clay and brought it to life by ritual incantations and sequences of Hebrew letters. It is believed that some mystics still know the secrets to making the Golem come to life, to become a helper, a companion, or a rescuer of an imperiled Jewish community.
